Competition between the many airlines, big and small, is growing every day. With this rivalry becoming more aggressive with each season, it’s no great surprise to see airlines come up with special deals and offers to attract customers. Major international carriers and small local airlines alike are fighting for potential passengers by offering them anything they can imagine. Why? To get these people to come to their website and purchase tickets direct, instead of through travel agents and other third parties.

One of the most recent deals airlines around the world are promoting to attract passengers to their websites is a “promotional code”. These codes, frequently referred to as “promo codes” are a certain amount of numbers and letters that the airline uses to present passengers with discounts on airfares or additional sorts of special deals.
Naturally, American Airlines is one of the countless international airlines that use this marketing plan to catch the attention of customers and make them go to their site. American airline promo codes can be found on the official website itself.

American Airlines employs a downloadable desktop tool called “DealFinder” that allows the website to seek out special offers, discounts on airfares and vacation packages based on a customer’s selection of destinations, departure and arrival dates and budget. With DealFinder, a passenger will obtain notifications of deals that suit their needs and wishes through email or RSS feed.

American airline promotion codes are offered for discounts on national fares across the United States as well as a number of discounts on international fares to selected countries. These promo codes are also available for discounts on hotel rates across the United States and abroad. Some promo codes can be used for deals and discounts on car rentals.

Some of the benefits of American airline promo codes and the purchase of airline tickets and other services on the official website include:
•	Lower or no booking fees for airline tickets as well as hotel and vacation packages
•	Preferential seating and/or more available seats on every flight
•	Additional flight frequencies on the same route
•	More non-stop flights and/or better options on dates and times
•	Reasonable connection flights with little or no waiting time between the changing of planes.
•	Frequent flyer miles and other prizes for loyal customers
With all these benefits, it’s no wonder online travel agencies and other booking agents are losing business.

Airplanes are a very common method of traveling due to how fast you can get from one location to the next. However, that often comes with a hefty price that not everyone can afford. The cost of driving may be more affordable but the time involved is more than you bargained for. Before you give up though you need to learn about ways you can save money on air fares.

Most people use their credit cards at least a couple of times each month. Find out if any of yours offer a rewards program that includes flight miles. This way for each dollar you spend you will get points towards flying. You can cash them in to get a free flight or at least a discounted price when you are ready to travel. The guidelines for this type of money savings on air fare vary by offer so make sure you check into the details.

Checking around online for special offers and web fares is a great way to save money as well. You can check with different airlines, online travel sites, and even your travel agent to compare prices. Traveling on Tuesdays and Wednesdays seem to offer the lowest prices. You will also experience fewer people in the airports and fewer delays on those days of the week.

When you check online fares, click the box that allows you to check flexible dates. It may surprise you to learn that changing your travel plans by one day either direction may save you hundreds of dollars on the cost of the flight. If you come across great one way deals, you may find it is cheaper for you to book that way rather than a roundtrip ticket. You may need to use two different airlines in order to get the best prices this way.

The flexibility of your times can also save you money on air fares. If you are willing to travel early in the morning or late at night the cost can be 1/3 or ½ of what it would be for peak hours of travel. Since these airplanes often have fewer passengers you will also find more room to store your carry on items and to stretch out for the duration of your flight.

One way to save money on a vacation is with an all inclusive package. When you book such a trip, it will reduce the anxiety over how much money you will need to take along with you. This is because the cost of things will all be covered in what you pay in advance. This includes your travel to the destination such as an airplane or ship, your lodging, and your meals.

When you decide to go with an all inclusive vacation package you need to check exactly what you get with it. Will the food provided be substantial for those traveling with you? If not you are going to need to plan to take funds for additional snacks and meals. Look at the activities that are covered with the vacation package. Do you plan to take part in them? If not you may be paying too much as you won’t be getting the full value out of the experience.

The cost of an all inclusive vacation is going to depend on many factors. Your destination is the first thing that needs to be considered. When you plan on traveling is also important. If you plan to go during a peak time of year the cost is going to be much more than when it is slower. If you can pick dates during the slower time of year that is more money in your pocket.

In order to determine how much you will save with an all inclusive vacation, make sure you estimate what the cost of each portion covered would be if you paid for it out of pocket. This way you can decide if this type of vacation plan is right for you. Many people do find it to be a more relaxing and affordable method of planning and paying for a vacation though.

It is also important to note that there are a few items that aren’t covered with all inclusive vacations. They include gratuities, souvenirs, and activities you wish to take part in but that aren’t part of the covered vacation package you have signed up to take part in.

Planning your vacation online can be fun and it can save you money. There are often great discounts offered that you won’t get directly from the location or from a travel agency. You do need to spend some time looking around though. The more flexible your travel dates can be the more money you will save. Many of the sites allow you to compare prices for several airlines and hotels at once. This is going to cut down on the leg work you have to do.

Sign up for alerts from the various sites as well. This way you will be emailed when they have lower prices available. This is a great way to take advantage of the best prices at they become available. If a certain vacation seems too expensive right now you may be able to afford it when you receive such alerts. Look for discount codes as well. If you are checking prices and see a section for a promo code, then they definitely exist and you can find them online to enter for additional savings.

It is a common misconception that the package deals offer the lowest prices. In many cases you can save money by booking the flight, room, and even a rental car all at once. However, that isn’t always the case so make sure you take the time to look into it further. You may discover you can find some great savings by booking each part of your trip separately.

Keep a written log of the prices you find and the sites they are on. You will notice that the prices can change quite often. It can be tempting to book at a price but you may want to wait for it to drop. If your travel dates aren’t for a while then you have plenty of time to find a great price you are happy with. One way to save a ton of money planning your vacation on line is to take what is offered on sale at the last minute. Such deals are offered so that rooms and flight seats don’t go empty.

When you plan your vacation online, make sure you take the time to read all of the details about it. There may be hidden fees or policies that aren’t a good fit for your needs. Make sure you understand about refunds and cancellations as well so you aren’t out the money you paid should you not be able to travel as you had intended.

Is there any such thing as a perfect vacation? You bet there is but it requires good planning and organization. The vacations that prove to be disastrous, expensive, or simply not fun are those thrown together at the last minute. However, by spending a little bit of time, you can compare prices, check out many different destination options, and end up with a wonderful vacation that you will never forget. The following six tips are just a few that you could consider when planning the perfect vacation.

1.	Options – The first tip to planning the perfect vacation is to keep your options open. In other words, if you had your heart set on a trip to Hawaii, but you find it is outside of your budget, you can still choose a sunny destination with beaches for far less. Instead of zeroing in on a particular destination, think of the type of environment you are most interested in, as well as activities and culture.

2.	Finances – Be realistic about the amount of money you can afford for the perfect vacation. Unfortunately, many people will go on vacation knowing they are spending way over their means, only to return home and find themselves in a financial mess. Obviously, being faced with money troubles will only ruin any of the good memories of the vacation. Instead, determine exactly what you can afford to spend and then choose your destination, accommodations, and other expenses accordingly.

3.	Travel Agency – If you are unsure where to start in planning the perfect vacation, consider working with a reputable travel agency. With this, you can describe the type of vacation and amenities you want, allowing the agent to do the work for you. For individuals who are busy with work or family, using a travel agency helps save tremendous time and effort.

4.	Pet Care – Some people will kennel pets or have someone pet sit while on vacation but today, we see a growing number of individuals who want to include this important member of the family in the vacation. In addition, hotels are now more pet-friendly than ever before. If you want to travel with your pet, make sure the hotel you choose is one that will allow it. In addition, a fee is usually associated with pets in a hotel so always ask about price. Then, if you will be flying with your pet, contact the airlines to determine cost, size/type of the pet carrier needed, and any shots/certifications needed by the vet.

5.	Traveler’s Checks – Although you would likely carry some cash on your perfect vacation, we strongly recommend that you purchase American Express traveler’s checks, which are accepted just about anywhere. That way, if your purse, wallet, or luggage with the checks inside were stolen, you would be reimbursed immediately after contacting the American Express office so you are not left out in the cold.

6.	Travel Insurance – Typically, people traveling within the United States do not purchase travel insurance but you might consider it. This type of insurance is beneficial if you were injured while on vacation. With this, you would be covered for treatment at any hospital. Again, it is often not needed for US travel but it is worth investigating.

Key to travel these days is savings. If you’re taking a flight, then it’s important to find an airfare that won’t exhaust the bulk of your budget.

Key to travel these days is savings. If you’re taking a flight, then it’s important to find an airfare that won’t exhaust the bulk of your budget. Indeed, doing one’s homework when it comes to air travel can help you save and get your trip off to a flying start. But where to begin?

Factors affecting a flight’s cost include the season, the price of fuel, ongoing “fare wars,” and in some cases, a surcharge. Fortunately, for travel within the United States, you won’t need to worry about a surcharge just yet. However, this is certainly something that can change in the future, as the rules to the airfare game are constantly evolving.

As competition for passengers increases, airlines and online agencies are all attempting to offer the most competitive (and thus, attractive) price. When doing your research, look at ongoing “wars,” which may include regional, mini, or system-wide offers. Nowadays, many of the smaller airline carriers are reserving their best prices for their own websites. For instance, jetBlue Airways and Alaska Airlines offer sales on a weekly basis.

Another good bet is Southwest Airlines. Their slogan of “Wanna Get Away” pretty much captures the feeling we all have from time to time to travel. Though it’s one of the largest carriers in the United States, Southwest nonetheless continues to operate like a smaller one, offering the best prices via its own site. Thus, if you’re traveling to any of its destination points, particularly on the west coast, go to Southwest.com directly. There, you’ll find “Click ‘n Save” special offers covering airfares, car rentals, and vacation packages.

In addition to looking at airfare prices at airline sites and online agencies like Travelocity, Expedia, Orbitz, SideStep, Kayak, and Farecast, you’ll also want to keep in mind these handy tips:

1. Formulate a “base price” based on your initial research. This will help you determine what is actually a good deal or a dud without recourse. A base price will also help you figure a realistic trip budget. How much will the airfare cost? How much is left?

2. If possible, be flexible when it comes to flight dates. If you don’t need to visit a city at a particular time, then search for the best fare overall. Oftentimes you’ll find that just a few weeks beyond the date you were searching for is a major discount for the same route.

3. Consider booking sites, such as Priceline or Hotwire, which list a number of deals daily. The caveat being however that once purchased, a ticket is nonrefundable. Again, take time to research and make an informed decision, one that you’ll be happy with. Taking into account price, travel dates, and the fine print.

4. Speaking of “fine print,” take a serious look at airlines that will discount, should your ticket lower in price. Usually, an airline will honor the difference if the price cut is within a certain window of time. However, look at what the “service fee” might be. After all, you wouldn’t want to get your refund and then turn it right around to cover a processing fee! (Related: check airfares often, even after you’ve made your purchase, so you’ll know immediately if there’s a discount/refund to be requested.)

5. It might sound strange, but it’s true: consider purchasing two tickets versus one. Instead of flying “one-way,” you might instead wish to book two flights – one to a connector city and then another from that city to your destination. For instance, a one-way flight from New York to San Diego may be more expensive than a flight from New York to Dallas and then, Dallas to San Diego. Compare the potential savings. It may just surprise you.

In short, when looking for dirt cheap airline tickets, take time to research your options. Fortunately for us travelers today, we have a number of online tools available. From price-comparison engines to extended-fare search. It does us well to make use of them. Also, be cautious, but not overly so. Remember to be prudent when it comes to a deal that seems “too good to be true,” but nonetheless open to the possibility of the real thing. In today’s world, it does exist. Good luck!

I am looking for discount airline tickets is a question I get asked a lot. I have used cheaptickets.com in the past. cheap tickets or any other similar source is a good place to look because they buy tickets in bulk for resale. When you buy tickets from a source like this, be aware of every little detail. For instance if you purposely bring only carry-on luggage, make sure that your discounted tickets have not landed you on a connecting commuter flight that defeats the purpose of a carry-on by requiring they go below deck (because of the small jet size).

Airline ticket prices fluctuate constantly based on supply and demand. You get the feeling it’s like the stock market. Buy far ahead of time and during periods when others are not likely to be competing for seats. Seats on a particular flight will drop in price due to poor sales, then quickly rise when the buying starts again. You’re particularly subject to these fluctuations when you buy direct from the airline.

There is an IE add-on called SideStep.com that searches multiple airline and travel databases simultaneously. I have not used it personally so I am not aware of its reputation, nor if it comes with malware.

Both Kayak and Sidestep (which can be used with firefox) are great. They are not resellers themselves but direct you towards the cheapest airfare.

The interface on Kayak.com is especially nice– you can select which airports, flight time, and it shows you how the price fluctuates to help you better deduce which concessions are worth it. I always check a few sites before purchasing and found that I can assure myself a good price by purchasing about 4 weeks in advance of my flight. If you purhcase too early, fares are often much higher.

Air fare prices do fluctuate, so keeping an eye on the price is important. But that also takes time, which is why I think TripStalker is great. It’s a downloadable application (Windows only) that continuously searches for the best price on airfares (and hotels & cars rentals). You can be notified via email or desktop popup when a price drop occurs; the service is particularly great for those obligation trips (Weddings, reunions, etc.) because you know you have to go, and you know when you have to go and you know you want to save money getting there!

1. Find the flights you want on Orbitz/Travelocity/etc and then search for those exact flights on the airline’s own page. American Airlines has a low price guarantee, for example. I found the airlines themselves to have slightly cheaper airfare prices.

2. Believe it or not, sometimes you can get cheaper flights by buying two one-ways separately, one of them from Southwest or JetBlue. (Especially true for multi-city flights.)

3. Flexibility with multiple airports helps when you are looking for discount airline tickets. My cheapest airfare for a multi-city flight arrives and departs from different airports in all three cities. I’ll just have to keep my travel documents with me to remember which is which!

There are many specialty travel agencies that have access to special fares for specific travel purposes, especially when traveling internationally. These include student travel, humanitarian aid travel, mission travel, group travel, and others. MTSTravel.com, for instance, specializes in international travel for not-for-profit organizations, humanitarian aid travel and missions travel.

Aside from the online sites (I haven’t seen onetravel.com mentioned yet, so there it is, check out their Travel Advisor’s corner for more tips) there are the more traditional means of finding cheap flights.

1) Check prices from your three nearest airports. Flights to or from Baltimore/Washington can be dirt cheap relative to Dulles or Reagan. So try this on both destination and home port. Afew of the search engines are starting to do this.

2) Overshoot. Especially if your destination is a hub city (Atlanta, Chicago, New York). Look for cheap flights to minor destinations ($99 to Duluth!) on airlines that use your target city as a hub. Don’t check any bags.

3) Along the mid-atlantic corridor, take the train. Despite its fiscal woes, Amtrak is often a luxurious (relatively) cost-effective alternative to cattle-car flights and has often proven to be faster when congestion or weather cause air traffic delays. Amtrak is trying hard to degrade its service to the same level as the airlines, but it still hasn’t sunk that low. Oh, and since you end up in a downtown station, you save cabfare from the airport.

4) Make friends with an airline employee. Its the only way to fly on a discounted “standby” fare any more. I think its called a ‘buddy fare’ and is strictly on a space available basis.

5) Consider driving or (for a diffent kind of adventure) take the bus. Really, what’s your hurry?

No other industry (well maybe the music publishing industry) goes so far out of its way to abuse, mistreat, mislead and constantly lower standards of customer satisfaction at constantly increasing prices. But don’t get me started.

1. When traveling internationally, look for an agency — yup, a real live agency — in a neighborhood with a high percentage of citizens from the country you’re traveling to (Williamsburg for Poland, for example). Those agencies buy out huge chunks of a flight and you can get cheaper fares — I once went to the Czech Republic for $700 when everyone else was paying about $1200, and I have heard equally good things about flights to China, etc.

2. Check the American Express site. I have absolutely no idea why, but their fares are almost ALWAYS the cheapest airfares I can find after scouring all the other places listed above. You don’t need a card to buy them from AMEX, either–it’s just that the site is handy.

More travelers are forced to choose between a high priced airfare ticket and the lowest airfare available ticket, without fully knowing that there can a lot of times be as many as 30 more fare buckets available for the same flight.

At best, only the cheapest airfare in the available fare category will be offered to the passenger as options.

We all know that many business (and frequent) travelers are happy about doing their part by booking the lowest airfare available they can sometimes hurt themselves and their company.

To begin with, they can hurt themselves because the lowest airfare available sometimes don’t offer the most elite qualifying points for their frequent flyer program.

Also, some of the cheapest fares don’t qualify for frequent flyer miles, depending on the route the airline takes.

When you think of most companies, sales reps and executives travel the most. Often times a sales rep already knows the day they are leaving on a flight but are uncertain as to when they will actually return and will require an open-ended ticket.

This means the purchase of a full fare ticket or at the very least, changing an existing ticket with a penalty of $75 or more. Each fare bucket offered by an airline comes with its own set of restrictions and many times purchasing a ticket that is not the lowest airfare available (but not full fare), will allow flight changes without penalty and provide maximum frequent flyer points.

Most major airline websites will let customers buy one fare and “up fare” the purchase to a higher fare by the contacting the Web Services phone number for that airline.

This can help travelers avoid fees incurred by booking the fare through a reservation agent while also giving them credit for any “online booking mileage bonus points” the airline may provide passengers.

Basically, an informed customer has the purchase power. Knowing what is available to you is the best way key to save money associated with airline travel.

If you plan your next trip or vacation ahead, you can find some of the best deals with consolidators or “bucket shops”.

Consolidator fares are simply traditional airline fares, purchased in bulk by consolidators around the world and resold at steep discounts.

Airlines who want to ensure that no seats go empty will sell excess inventory, at discounted cost, to a consolidator. The consolidator then passes along the savings to the individual traveler.

While consolidators mark-up the fares they receive from the airline, these mark-ups are marginal, and are still often way below cost the cost of purchasing a ticket directly from the airline.

Consolidators keep their prices low to boost their sales volume.

Consolidator contracts often stipulate a specified sales volume, and many airlines offer year-end bonuses or additional commission discounts based on generated sales.

Most consolidators concentrate on sales to specific regions, particularly Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Australia or Asia. Consolidator fares within the United States used to be rare, however, airlines are dumping more and more unsold inventory on the market.

“It’s a growing trend on the domestic front, says Kelly Monaghan, author of Fly Cheap and The Intrepid Traveler. “Many travel agents have stopped selling airline tickets. Therefore, airlines are moving more inventory into the consolidator’s hands. Especially long haul routes,” Monaghan continues.

Prevailing market conditions influence airfares. As a result, consolidator fares and conditions of sale change constantly.

Consolidator fares are usually cheaper than published airline fares, but not always. Check current sales by airlines servicing your destination, and Smarter Living’s Deal Alert Section for the latest deals.

Monaghan offers the following advice to people considering buying consolidator tickets: “Understand the difference between a real consolidator and a discount travel agent. The key is to buy as close to the source as possible. Often what looks like a consolidator ticket is actually a charter flight operated by the travel agency.

Buying discount tickets from a good consolidator – directly or through a good travel agents is secure and reliable”.
Consolidator fares do not have the same conditions as comparable public fares.

Some things to keep in mind with consolidator tickets:

· Some airlines allow accumulation of Frequent Flier miles; some don’t.
· Most do not allow advance seat assignments.
· Many are use it or lose it. Changes are often not permitted.
· Every consolidator fare can be purchased through a ‘good’ travel agent at no extra cost.

There are essentially three types of consolidators:

1. Wholesale-only consolidators: These agencies do not sell to the public, and you won’t see any of their advertising. Many travel agents deal with directly these agencies.

2. Destination specialists: These agencies specialize in a particular destination or area and have usually negotiated discounts with several airlines to the region. They offer these deals to their clients as well as to other consolidators. These deals are often found in Sunday newspapers, and other foreign publications.

“Excellent deals can be found this way,” Monaghan says. “I’ve found these deals in ethnic newspapers in New York City. Even in a foreign-language publications, the air travel ads are recognizable, with phone number, destination cities, and the round-trip prices.” Monaghan adds, however, that if you want the absolute lowest fare, you may end up on an airline that you have never heard of before.

This is something that might only appeal to the more adventurous traveler. If you want to stick to name brand carriers, be prepared to pay a bit more.

3. Bucket shops: While the name may sound tacky, these agencies specialize in complicated itineraries with multiple destinations. Bucket shops are located in only a few world locations. The best places to find them are London, New York City, San Francisco, and other large cities with a high concentration of ethnic populations.

Many bucket shops negotiate their own deals directly with the airlines for routes on which they cannot get reasonable discounts. Bucket shop deals often deal with one-way tickets, which are great for around-the-world itineraries.

So how do you find a reputable consolidator or bucket shop?

1. Make sure the company accredited with the and International Airline Travel Agents’ Network (IATAN). These associations are proof that the agency is financially sound, and that its agents are experienced.

2. Check the agency out with the Better Business Bureau.

3. If you can, visit the agency’s office in person to see if you are comfortable dealing with them.

4. If you have any doubt about the transaction with your agency, try contacting the airline you are booked on to make sure that you are holding confirmed reservations.

5. Try to follow all of the above steps before you pay for the ticket. Furthermore, I always recommend paying by credit card so that you can refuse the charge if you do not receive your tickets. It’s easy, inexpensive, and practical insurance.

There really isn’t a “catch” to consolidator fares. All you need to do is plan ahead, know where you would like to go and be a bit flexible.
