How to Travel Green Wherever You Go

March 20, 2008 by warren707

A buzz word in the travel industry these days is definitely “green”. Although it’s true that this movement towards environmental responsibility is found most everywhere these days, for travelers, it’s becoming increasingly a focus. Along with the standard questions “where to go?” and “what to do?”, many travelers today are also asking: “what’s my impact?” and “what can I do to help?”

From this desire to “go green,” responsible travel has risen in popularity and even when traveling to America’s urban centers, it remains a goal. Thus, it’s no wonder that the travel industry has been working towards meeting that demand.

From LEED-certified (Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design) hotels like the Orchard Garden Hotel in San Francisco to eco-friendly transportation like segway tours, travelers now have options. When compared with five years ago these options are many; and with the environment being a current hot topic, this shift to green and responsible travel is sure to remain positive.

This paradigm shift is of course welcome news. While it’s true that it might be difficult to find an LEED-certified hotel in your city of choice (as there are still only a handful), your own individual efforts can turn most any accommodation “green.” If one is serious about minimizing his/her impact on the environment, there are simple steps that can be taken. For instance:

• Conserve: Practice the same habits you do at home and try not to waste water or energy if possible. From turning the lights off when you leave to taking shorter showers and possibly, bringing your own toiletries.

• Walking (minimal-impact transportation): Oftentimes the best way to experience a city, such as San Francisco or New York City, is to walk. From this perspective, you can truly get to know a place. Its local color, its energy. Walking is also perfect for photo-taking. In addition, when not walking, public transportation (like buses and metro trains) is the preferred option.

• Eco-cars: If you must rent a car however, then definitely research green options. You’ll find that some rental companies are getting into the green business as well and will have a hybrid or two to choose from. Be aware of your carbon footprint and make a responsible choice.

• Thing(s) to Do: One, the local farmer’s market. Even in America’s most metropolitan cities, you’ll be able to find a farmer’s market full of organic produce and locally-sourced foods.

• Dining Out and About: When dining out, again research. Many businesses tout their commitment to using local produce and supporting the area’s farmers/manufacturers. By dining at these places, you too can contribute to that effort. What’s more, you’ll also avoid room service (and the plastic/paper used for such a luxury).

So, there you have it, though it does take some additional planning to travel green and responsibly these days, it’s worth it in the end. When you return home, you’ll not only have the memories of a beautiful American city, but also the knowing that you did your part in helping the great green cause!
