Spirit $9 Club

spirit-airlines.jpgHave you heard about the Spirit Airline $9 Club? Just so you know the $9 airfares are very limited — and you still have to pay taxes and fees — but Spirit Airlines does offer the $9 club airfare on a selected number of flights, including travel to the Bahamas, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic.

What’s the motivation for Spirit Air to offer this Spirit $9 Club?

Airline president Ben Baldanza said that the $9 club airfares are designed to bring in more business for the airline’s growing routes to the Caribbean. Mainly to leisure hot spots, because many passengers purchase tickets on the airline’s first flights to their destinations.

But due to the fact that many of those customers normally stay for a number of days, that leaves many of Spirit’s returning flights “flying empty” as the carrier powers up its initial service to the new destinations.

You should know that the availability of the $9 fares can be mostly limited and have a number of restrictions.

There’s also a marketing gimmick related to the $9 sale. They claim to not make much money on the flights, saying that the publicity around the spirit $9 club alone could be valuable.

Spirit’s goal is to have many passengers telling their friends that they got a $9 fare to Jamaica. Now, for the real deal: I checked four routes, and I was only able to locate the $9 fare only on two of the 8 legs I looked at (the outbound portion of New York LaGuardia to Nassau, Bahamas; and the outbound portion from Detroit to Montego Bay).
